Our History

For many years, the High Atlas Mountains and the surrounding hills were visited by various tourists seeking to understand and experience the Berber way of life. They mainly came through foreign-owned tourism companies based largely out of Marrakech. While these companies did employ many Moroccans—even some locals—the vast majority of profits were ultimately taken out of the High Atlas region that produced them. As a result, the beautiful land, culture, and people of the rural Berber villages were bringing greater wealth predominantly to those whose interests lay somewhere else.

In 2008, a foreign company catering to English-speaking tourists stopped operating in the High Atlas region. This opened up an opportunity for a locally-based, Moroccan-owned, and operated company to be established—hence the birth of Indigo Expedition.

Today, our company "Indigo Expedition" is registered, owned, and run from Marrakech City. We pride ourselves on being a local company that supports the economic, environmental, and social well-being of our area.

Said Elhansali was born and raised in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, where he developed a deep connection to the land, culture, and people of this beautiful region. His firsthand experience growing up in a traditional Berber community gives him unique insight into the authentic Moroccan experience that travelers seek.

Since 2015, Said has been working as an experienced official tour guide, sharing his passion for Morocco's diverse landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture with visitors from around the world. His extensive knowledge of the High Atlas Mountains, Sahara Desert, and imperial cities makes him an invaluable resource for travelers seeking authentic experiences.

His vision is to create meaningful travel experiences while preserving Morocco's cultural heritage and natural environment for future generations.

Sustainable Tourism

With Indigo Expedition company, we support the basic tenet of sustainable tourism: that foreign tourists do as little damage as possible to the environment and culture of an area while helping to generate income and opportunity for local people. Our contribution to this principle can be found in the following areas:

Local Ownership

Our company is owned and operated in the area where we work (ie. High Atlas & Middle Atlas). All of our staff and business partners live in the local area.

Community Investment

Profit from our business is returned to the area through using local businesses and directing a portion of every excursion price to Berber host families.

Environmental Responsibility

We reduce our environmental impact by not operating our own fleet of vehicles and using existing transport infrastructure.

Cultural Preservation

Our company encourages and celebrates the local Berber culture of the area. We inform customers about proper cultural norms.

Our Values & Principles

Our Aim

Our first aim is to provide our customers with the best service by showing them the best of Morocco:

  • Living with Locals Including the Berbers that live in the mountains & the Arabs too.
  • Witness the cultural diversity or the culture shock of the Moroccan people.

Environmental Responsibility

We reduce our environmental impact by:

  • Not operating our own fleet of vehicles
  • Using existing transport infrastructure in Morocco
  • Having customers travel to villages on foot using existing trails
  • Keeping tour groups small to minimize impact on plant and animal life

Cultural Respect

We inform our customers, both before an excursion and during it, as to proper cultural norms regarding dress and behavior. We never intend their presence in the rural villages to be an unwelcome or negative experience for the inhabitants.

We provide our customers with resources online to learn more about the culture that they will be visiting and the language of the people they will encounter.

About Indigo Expedition

Nestled in the Fès-Meknès region in the north of Morocco, Moulay Idriss Zerhoun is a jewel of a destination to visit on a trip to this fascinating African country. Whilst it’s located just 30 kilometres north of Meknès and less than 5 kilometres away from Volubilis Archaeological Site, Moulay Idriss could easily be overlooked by those more well-known great places to explore. I’m grateful though, to have experienced Moulay Idriss back in 2019; in this article I’ll explain why it’s well-worth including this destination in your Moroccan travel itinerary. It stood out as a highlight for me… and that is rather high praise considering the array of other great places I was fortunate to see (like Tangier, Chefchaouen and Rabat) when travelling around the north of Morocco!
